2009 Naplan Writing Prompt

The Williams family had just bought their new home. It had 2 stories, a basement, and a huge backyard. From the outside it looked like a pretty run down, old styled house. I had an average sized driveway that could fit 2 cars, along the side it had little green bushes, coming off the driveway was a pathway heading to the front door. 

The Williams family consisted of the mum and dad,  Yazzy and James, and 2 young boys, Hamish and Ross aged 7 and 11. Hamish was a quiet, thoughtful young boy and Ross was an adventurous, outspoken young boy. Ross would always take on challenges and think that nothing would ever go wrong, he would take risks and go to the next level in them.

When Yazzy was telling the boys which room they would have, Ross had  a funny feeling that he should take the darker room on the right, to him it looked more adventurous and interesting. so he demanded to his mum that he should have that one. So Ross ends up having the room that he wanted, and Hamish took the other one. Ross started to look around his new room as soon as all of his boxes had been put in there, he was trying to figure out what he should put where. His room was sort of an odd shape, it kind of looked like an L shape. He decided to put his bed at the bottom end of the down-stroke of the L. He then started to unpack the rest of his stuff around that.

At 7:30 Yazzy made Hamish and Ross go to bed, they didn't want to, but James reinforced that they do so. Ross was in bed, awake as ever, feeling that he shouldn't be wasting him youth by lying in bed at 7:30 when he could be out exploring. Just as he was thinking that, he noticed a crack in the ceiling above him, almost like an indent. Curious at what this was, Ross stands on his bed and press against the crack, he noticed that he could move the square part of the roof away from where it was meant to be. Ross was amazed at his discovery! He had found a new part of the house that no one else knew about. Ross decided that he should check out this new area before closing it and before anyone else might find it. So he climbs up into the little space and finds out its all dark, so he climbs back down and finds his torch, then heads back up into the space. 

Ross squeezes his whole body through the gap and stands up on the unstable wooden floor with bare feet. Hes shining the torch all around the room and doesn't see anything, the space hes in is only 2m by 2m so theres not much to see. He then shines the torch to the ground and he sees a box. A little wooden box sitting in the middle of the room. On the little wooden box is a big metal lock. On the lock it says "I OPEN AT THE CLOSE" at this point Ross is as confused as a man in a bra shop. He's trying to figure out what that means. He heads down to bed to think about it and try the next morning.

The next morning Ross is trying to figure out what "I open when closed" means. Hes thinking and thinking. He's trying to crack the riddle. He even goes up to Hamish and asks him, Hamish simply replies, close one door to open another. Ross quickly rushes up to his room as fast as he can, when he goes through his bedroom door he closes that, he then closes all the windows. Then he opens up the secret door in the roof, squeezes through again, walks over to the box and tries to pull open the lock, it doesn't open. He then angrily jumps up and down. Then he tries closed the the area he climb through. Then the lock magically opens by itself. Ross slowly creeps towards the box with his head held high trying to see whats inside. He gets to the box and sees a bear. An old dirty brown bear, sitting in the corner. Ross picks the bear up and thinks to himself  "Why the hell would I want a bear?" but he takes it down with him anyway.

That night as Ross was about to fall asleep he looks at the bear that he had thrown into the corner of his room , positioned like he was staring at Ross. Ross then flips over to his over shoulder to try and sleep. The next morning Yazzy walks into Ross' room and starts screaming. "MY CHILD HAS BEEN ATTACKED!!! ATTACKED!!!!" Ross then wakes up from all the screaming and says to his mum "Whats all the screaming about?" "YOUR BACK....ITS ALL SCRATCHED" Yazzy replies. "What do you mean?" Ross says, "GO LOOK IN THE MIRROR! ITS ALL BLOODY!" Ross then gets out of bed and painfully walks to the bathroom to look in the mirror. "OH MY GOD!!" screamed Ross. "WHAT HAS HAPPENED?!" he follows on. Yazzy then replies "I DON'T KNOW BUT I WANT TO FIND OUT" 

That day the Williams family was frisky and suspicious about everything around them. Yazzy and James put up survailence cameras up in Ross' room to monitor if it will happen again. They call the police and check out if this has happened before at this house. The police told them there was a murder in that room, but only with the original owner 47 years ago. Yazzy and James at this point were really scared for their child and for themselves. 

That night when Ross was trying to get to sleep he didn't see the bear where it was the night before. He then looked around the room and saw that it was in a different place. Ross automatically thought that his parents had moved it. He still had a weird feeling about it though, it didn't seem like a normal bear to him. 

The next morning Yazzy found her son Ross dead in his bed dead, with the bear hugging his arm with his head faced to the camera up in the corner of the ceiling, little do the parents know, they're bout to discover how Ross had died...
