The Merchant of Venice: Act IV sc i - Portia

PORTIA

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;

And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much
To mitigate the justice of thy plea;
Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there.

Summary: In this scene Portia is pleading to Shylock for the life of Antonio. Antonio is responsible for the debt that Bassanio owes Shylock. Bassanio is Portia's partner and needed money to be with Portia. When Bassanio borrowed the money the punishment for failure to pay back the money on time was 'a pound of flesh' which would cause certain death. Bassanio didn't pay the debt back in time and now Shylock wants his 'pound of flesh' from Antonio. Portia is trying to get Shylock to change his mind and see the virtue of being merciful.

Answer the following questions using quotes where applicable:
How does Portia describe mercy? How important and powerful is it
? Portia describes mercy like a drop of rain form heaven, that mercy is easy and nice and that it is mighty.
What can one achieve through mercy? One can achieve justice through mercy.
How is religion part of this speech? (You need to do some thinking on this one.)  Religion is apart of this speech in the way that he refers everything to God and heaven and says that mercy is what God would want, because he states that the rain is from heaven.

Othello (Act I sc iii) - Iago (Posted late due to laptop in IT)

IAGO

It is merely a lust of the blood and a permission of
the will. Come, be a man. Drown thyself! drown
cats and blind puppies. I have professed me thy
friend and I confess me knit to thy deserving with
cables of perdurable toughness; I could never
better stead thee than now. Put money in thy
purse
; follow thou the wars; defeat thy favour with
an usurped beard; I say, put money in thy purse. It
cannot be that Desdemona should long continue her
love to the Moor,-- put money in thy purse,--nor he
his to her: it was a violent commencement, and thou
shalt see an answerable sequestration:--put but
money in thy purse.
These Moors are changeable in
their wills: fill thy purse with money:--the food
that to him now is as luscious as locusts, shall be
to him shortly as bitter as coloquintida. She must
change for youth: when she is sated with his body,
she will find the error of her choice: she must
have change, she must: therefore put money in thy
purse
. If thou wilt needs damn thyself, do it a
more delicate way than drowning. Make all the money
thou canst: if sanctimony and a frail vow betwixt
an erring barbarian and a supersubtle Venetian not
too hard for my wits and all the tribe of hell, thou
shalt enjoy her; therefore make money
. A pox of
drowning thyself! it is clean out of the way: seek
thou rather to be hanged in compassing thy joy than
to be drowned and go without her.

Summary: In this section of the play, the villain Iago is motivating Rodrigo to act upon his feelings for Desdemona and even though she is committed to Othello ('the Moor'). Iago wants to take down Othello without actually doing it himself.

Henry V 'once more unto the breach' (posted late due to laptop in IT)

KING HARRY:
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility,
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger.
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favoured rage.
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect,
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon, let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swilled with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath, and bend up every spirit
To his full height.
On, on, you noblest English,

Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof,
Fathers that like so many Alexanders
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument.
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you called fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeomen,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding- which I doubt not,
For there is none of you so mean and base
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot.
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'
By William Shakespeare.

Final Speech

He was sitting there again in the corner of his bedroom drowning in shame and low self esteem.  His father sexually abused him and his mother physically abused him for the majority of his childhood.  He would go to school with bruises, and walk with difficulty, and when friends and family asked why, he would tell them the truth, but no-one believed him.  Not one single person.  As he grew older he developed violent behaviour.  He developed depression, and he developed the dangerous act of self harming.  The years past but the memories stayed by his side.  Too afraid to seek professional help he committed suicide at the age of 36.

Good morning Mr Cav and boys.

That is a true story, a sad story. Unfortunately its not the only one... 90% of sexual child abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way; 68% are abused by family members. 31% percent of women in the Australian prison were abused as children. Over 60% of people in drug rehabilitation centres report being abused or neglected as a child and a report of child abuse is made every ten seconds. Sadly some victims of child abuse become abusers in their later life. This vicious cycle HAS to stop.

I am talking to you about something that not everyone here will be aware of, or don't know much about. I am here to talk to you about our society underestimating the effects of child abuse. How many people here today know how many people die each year, from suffering child abuse? Well your answer, is too many. Too many people die each year from child abuse, more than one is even too many for me.

There are four different types of child abuse, which include; Physical, Sexual, Emotional and Neglect. All four types of abuse are just as bad as each other. Physical abuse, is aggression directed at a child by an adult through physical acts. Sexual abuse is when an adult or older adolescent abuses a child for sexual stimulation. Emotional abuse, is abuse which gets inside the child's brain, it mentally hurts and weakens the child. There are many forms of this which include name-calling, degradation, destruction of personal belongings, torture, excessive criticism, inappropriate or excessive demands, withholding communication, and routine labeling or humiliation. The last of these is Neglect. Neglect is when the parent does not provide the child with their needs such as food, water, shelter, clothing or hygiene.

Studies have shown that most victims of child abuse develop physical problems later in their life and  80% of victims suffer from a mental illness such as anxiety, depression, addiction and/or they act out. Children who are physically abused are likely to receive bone fractures, particularly rib fractures, and may have a higher risk of developing cancer. Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as juveniles, 28% more likely to be arrested as adults, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime.

Now, how many people here knew about any of that? How many people here knew that all of that was going on in the world? How many people here knew the effects of child abuse? My point exactly, I think that we can all come together and make people more aware of these effects, commercialize it, make this something known, anything we can to stop child abuse.

Over 30 reports have been made about abuse child abuse during this speech.
Thank You.

ROSS M-G Speech Feedback

  • Did the introduction capture you? The intro is very captivating and really makes you think about the situation and the topic, it makes me want to hear more about the topic and listen to the rest of his speech. He has done a good job at the intro
  • Is there enough information to convince you of their opinion? I only heard the intro at this point, the rest of his speech was missing, but from what I heard, what he was saying was a sad and painful picture I had in my mind. By him using pathos it convinced me of the topic
  • Is their opinion clearly organised? I believe that this speech is clearly organised, he gets his opinion across and is clear about his believes, he uses Pathos and Ethos and even Logos. In my opinion this is a great speech.
  • What suggestions would you make to improve the speech? Make the speech longer... I don't know how but it seems short. Also put a few more facts in it.

Assessment Speech Rough Draft

Good morning fellow classmates, and Mr Cav.

I am here today to talk to you about something that not everyone here will be aware of, or don't know much about. I am here to talk to you about our society underestimating the effects of child abuse. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds, but how many people here today know how many people die each year, from suffering child abuse? Well your answer, is too many. Too many people die each year from child abuse, more than one is even too many for me.

There are four different types of child abuse, which include; Physical, Sexual, Emotional and Neglect. All four types of abuse are just as bad as each other. Physical abuse, is aggression directed at a child by an adult through pysical acts. Sexual abuse is when an adult or older adolescent abuses a child for sexual stimulation. Emotion abuse, is abuse which gets inside the childs brain, it mentally hurts and weakens the child, there are many forms of this which include name-calling, ridicule, degradation, destruction of personal belongings, torture or destruction of a pet, excessive critisism, inappropriate or excessive demands, withholding communication, and routine labeling or humiliation. The last of these is Neglect, neglect is when the parent does not provide the child with their needs such as food, water, clothing, or hygiene.

Studies have shown that most victims of child abuse develop other physical problems later in their life. 80% of victims suffer from anxiety, depression or they act out.

Here are some statistics about child abuse for you: 90% of sexual child abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way; 68% are abused by family members. 31% percent of women in the Australian prison were abused as children. Over 60% of people in drug rehabilitation centers report being abused or neglected as a child.

This link gives me the different types of child abuse and the different effects for each. This along with the others will be useful

Assessment Brainstorming

For my assessment I am thinking of either doing "Should violent and expletive words get blocked out of songs" or " Does society underestermate the effects of Child abuse?" After thinking about which i feel more passionate about and which I would be able to talk longer about.

Should violent and expletive words get blocked out of songs: I think that they should because music is about freedom, its about expressing your feeling and or life stories through song. It would be hard to find a 4 minute speech out of this though.

Does society underestermate the effects of Child abuse?: This on the other hand has a lot of facts, and passion behind it. I would easily be able to mix fact and emotion in to this speech, i feel that it would be the better, stronger topic to talk about and I would be able to get 4 minutes out of it.

I have chosen to do "Does society underestermate the effects of Child abuse?"

Assessment Notes

FRIDAY 18th MARCH!

Nature of Task
Persuasive texts are designed to position a point of view(opinion, thesis). Texts that successfully persuade are usually highly emotive(emotional words, Influence the listener) and effectively balance opinions with facts(research, logos) Persuasive texts can make sweeping generalisations(uniformed conculsion),[DO NOT USE!]  rely on stereotypes and hyperbole and yet still seem credible. This is because a combination of objective(fact)  and subjective(subjective) information is usually used to persuade. Careful use of repetition and high modality words(persuasion techniques) can emphatically convey the composer’s purpose if it is counterbalanced with the use of statistics, expert evidence and product/idea endorsement from authoritative sources(ethos, objective). Moreover, effective incorporation of anecdotes(personal story), analogies(comparison) and inclusive language(including the audience) (techniques) can personalise the message and help connect the composer and their text with its audience.

CAS speech

Fellow Knox men! I am here to address you about the annual CAS swimming down at homebush on the 10th of March. I believe that not everyone here is going to be attending this event, but I am here to tell you why that is a mammoth regret. Put your hand up if you are attending next Thursday. WAIT. Put your hand up, if you are willing to give back to Knox and the swimmers that put the blood, sweat and tears in every practice. Every race. Every day or their lives.

If you were a swimmer, swimming next Thursday, would you like to know that you have the support by your peers? Would you like to know that all your mates are going out of their way to support you? I know I would....
Where is Trinity right now? Trinity is on the highest of podiums. Trinity is holding OUR title of CAS champs.  Where will you be when we take it from them? Would you rather be at home playing cod, getting your Gunship and Spy plane, or would you rather be in the stadium, cheering on the new champs, with your mates, having a good time. Put cod away for a night, have a good social time, cheering on the NEW winners, the NEW title holders, THE NEW PROUD CAS CHAMPIONS!

I am not here to make you come, i am here to make you think about the right choice in this situation. I have a dream that every one of you will attend next Thursday. I have a dream that you will support the Black and Blue and the 80 year tradition. I have a dream that all you men will come with your heads up high, proud to be called a Knox boy. I want you to be literally speechless after that night, I want you to scream so loud that you can't come to school the next day because you have lost your voice and your too exhausted. I have a dream, that what i'm saying here today will go through to you boys... Thank You

Obama speech

But the reason our campaign has always been different, the reason we began this improbable journey almost a year ago is because it's not just about what I will do as president. It is also about what you, the people who love this country, the citizens of the United States of America, can do to change it.
That's what this election is all about.
That's why tonight belongs to you. It belongs to the organizers, and the volunteers, and the staff who believed in this journey and rallied so many others to join the cause.
We know the battle ahead will be long. But always remember that, no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change.
We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics. And they will only grow louder and more dissonant in the weeks and months to come.
We've been asked to pause for a reality check. We've been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope. But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope.
(APPLAUSE)
For when we have faced down impossible odds, when we've been told we're not ready or that we shouldn't try or that we can't, generations of Americans have responded with a simple creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can. Yes, we can. Yes, we can.
It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation: Yes, we can.
It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail towards freedom through the darkest of nights: Yes, we can.
It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness: Yes, we can.
It was the call of workers who organized, women who reached for the ballot, a president who chose the moon as our new frontier, and a king who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the promised land: Yes, we can, to justice and equality.
Yes, we can, to opportunity and prosperity. Yes, we can heal this nation. Yes, we can repair this world. Yes, we can.
And so, tomorrow, as we take the campaign south and west, as we learn that the struggles of the textile workers in Spartanburg are not so different than the plight of the dishwasher in Las Vegas, that the hopes of the little girl who goes to the crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of L.A., we will remember that there is something happening in America, that we are not as divided as our politics suggest, that we are one people, we are one nation.
And, together, we will begin the next great chapter in the American story, with three words that will ring from coast to coast, from sea to shining sea: Yes, we can.
Thank you, New Hampshire. Thank you. Thank you.

The techniques that MLK uses that Obama also uses are, Repetition and Emotive words. Obama uses a lot of repetition all throughout this speech. As highlighted in RED. He uses Emotive words by repeating and making a "catch phrase" out of Yes We Can. He appeals to everyone around america, he announces everyone from different places around America, much like MLK.  He talks about children, little boy and little girls walking around, much like MLK with his four children. He also says " with three words that will ring from coast to coast, from sea to shining sea:Yes, we can." This is much like MLK in the way that MLK says that everyone will "Let Freedom Ring."
